Karrasekare is the new production by the Igor x Moreno company, inspired by the pagan carnival traditions of Sardinia and the Basque Country.
Karrasekare is a return to pre-Christian rituals, when the celebration of the spring solstice was not yet called carnival*, when people were not yet asked to stay away from meat, but rather to put much more on the fire.
Karrasekare looks to the past and delves into the future. It uses the same rhythms which have accompanied us for centuries to produce new free, fluid and queer identities. It tears pagan rituals from their context of origin (the street, the square,...) to transfer them to the cogs of the theatrical machine.
Karrasekare is a show which vibrates with the energy of a festival, with the emotion of being together, with the risk that arises when dance, singing and joy mix, with our sense of modesty, with the winter that was and the blossoming which is coming right now.
*the word 'carnival' (from the Latin 'to remove meat') originally referred to a banquet of farewell to meat which began Lent.
‘Igor x Moreno’ is a transnational contemporary dance company directed by Igor Urzelai Hernando (Basque Country, 1983) and Moreno Solinas (Sardinia, 1987). The company creates and tours internationally with its work, expressing its choreographic thought through stage shows, installations, music and curation. Its work has received several recognitions such as the Rudolf Laban award and nominations for the Total Theater Award and the National Dance Awards, amongst others.
Igor x Moreno is inspired by what precedes the word, with a particular focus on the only thing we all have: the body. Igor and Moreno start from what makes human beings and animals so special and seek to create an ideal framework to share their ideas without prescribing one single interepretation.
Igor Urzelai Hernando and Moreno Solinas are artists associated with The Place (London) and form part of the collective direction of S'ALA - spazio per artist*. They currently collaborate with the British Council Italia as advisory members of its culture council.
